Four completely different destinations in one trip
From Coyhaique, Patagonia’s capital, Marlies, I and friends Peter, Yves and Rolf first headed down the Carretera Austral by 4WD where we made a short but impressive stop at some of Rio Baker’s tributaries.
Many King were jumping but due to high temperatures, low water and other interests we did not spend much time there. Exploring the area further south, staying in lovely cabins was our prime but difficult goal. Difficult to find and even more difficult to finally get to the water. But our efforts were rewarded by some 3-4 wild Trout, mostly Browns, each p.p.p.d with sizes between 50 and 78cm. Of course there were also lots of small juvenile fish but not on places with big fish. We fished (mostly dry: Caddis,Sedges, Tshernobyl Ants) completely on our own both in anonymous rivers and lagunas and lake outlets, which are sometimes visited by locals, all in spectacular nature.
Next place was up north from Coyhaique where we enjoyed crazy private fishing from our luxury accommodation. Again 6-7 big Trout pppd from 45 up to 78 cm, a mixture from Browns and Rainbows( in some parts hatchery fish). Here we experienced broken tippets on
many big, big fish (something that usually never happens to me…I feel ashamed). Great scenery, great variation in lakes and streams (that most of the season hold smaller fish at around 40-45 cm) .
The third part was south of Coyhaique, the famous lakes area. Deep blue and crystal clear Rio Paloma is from an astonishing beauty. But at that time somewhat overfished by rafts at the end of the season, just before the Trout start running from the lakes into the rivers again. A good guide with great accommodation however could still offer an unknown alternative , certainly before and during evening hatches when good numbers of 40-50 cm Browns were caught.
Finally, we made a trip to the Argentinian Sant Cruz Province where we had discovered a lovely estancia some 4 years ago. A beautiful stream with moderate sized strong wild Rainbows, fed by one of the bigger lakes above, in front of our guesthouse. A bit further up a moon shaped volcanic laguna, not only full of fossils but also of very big Rainbows up to 8 kg, however , at least earlier, released from a hatchery, plus Condors, Zorro’s, Flamingo’s, Guanacas, Hares, Goose, Patagonian Swans and many other animals performed a totally relaxed atmosphere, certainly also in the Lounge with a Long drink and an asado.
Our last night in a lovely, cosy hotel in Santiago including a 500 G T-Bone steak with good Missiones do Rengo red wine completely fitted into this great trip……
